A major political development has unfolded in Karnataka. Ending years of speculation over the chief minister’s post-sharing arrangement, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has resigned from his position. Congress leaders have already hinted that Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar will be the next Chief Minister of the state.
Siddaramaiah, accompanied by several ministers including DK Shivakumar, visited Lok Bhavan and submitted his resignation letter to the Governor’s secretary, as Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot was unavailable. The Governor is expected to take a decision later this evening.
Speaking emotionally after stepping down, Siddaramaiah said he resigned following directions from the Congress high command. He stated that his government successfully implemented 158 out of the 160 guarantees promised during the elections. He also thanked Congress leadership and party workers for their continued support.
The Congress party had faced intense suspense over the CM post after winning the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, with Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar both seen as strong contenders. Eventually, Siddaramaiah was chosen as CM while DK Shivakumar was appointed Deputy CM. Now, political circles believe the Congress high command has finally cleared the way for a leadership transition in Karnataka.
