India vs Japan: A Historic Cricket First

A new chapter in India-Japan sporting ties is set to begin later this month, with the two nations preparing for their first-ever men’s T20 International encounter.

The match will be played on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The fixture, known as the Suzuki Cup, has been announced jointly by the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Cricket to Celebrate 75 Years of Diplomatic Ties

The special fixture will be part of celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan.

It will also serve as the first event under “Sport 75,” an initiative designed to encourage people-to-people exchanges and greater cooperation between the two countries through sport. The initiative follows an agreement reached during a summit involving the Japanese and Indian prime ministers.

India Arrives as T20 World Champions

The match carries additional significance for Japan, as India enter the contest as the reigning ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions.

For India, the game is expected to provide useful preparation ahead of the 2026 Asian Games, which are also being held in Japan. India are the defending men’s cricket champions from the 2022 Asian Games.

Japan, meanwhile, will get the opportunity to test itself against one of the strongest teams in world cricket. The Japanese side is scheduled to participate in the Asian Games men’s cricket competition, making the India clash an important learning experience.

BCCI Welcomes Cricket's Expansion in Japan

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia described the fixture as an important moment for Indian cricket, particularly because it takes the team into new territory.

The BCCI has also highlighted the opportunity to introduce cricket to a wider audience in Japan and across East Asia while working with the JCA to support the sport’s development in the country.

JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji called India's visit a landmark moment for Japanese cricket and welcomed the opportunity to host the reigning world champions.
