Duane Arnold Plant Set for Revival

Iowa’s Duane Arnold Energy Center has been offline since 2020 after an intense storm and heavy rainfall damaged the facility.

NextEra Energy subsequently mothballed the plant. At the time, abundant and inexpensive natural gas had made nuclear power less attractive from an economic standpoint.

The energy landscape has changed significantly since then, particularly because of the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data centres.

$1.9 Billion Loan From the US Government

The Department of Energy is providing NextEra with a $1.9 billion loan to support the refurbishment of the nuclear facility.

It is the second major US government loan aimed at reviving a shuttered nuclear reactor. Last year, the department provided a $1 billion loan to Constellation Energy to support the restart of a reactor at Three Mile Island.

Microsoft signed an agreement with Constellation Energy to restart a reactor at Three Mile Island. The reactor is scheduled to return to operation in 2028 with an expected output of 835 megawatts.

In Illinois, Constellation Energy’s Clinton Clean Energy Center found a major technology customer in Meta. Meta is purchasing the plant’s clean-energy attributes while the electricity itself continues to flow into the local grid.

A New Chapter for US Nuclear Power

The revival of retired nuclear plants could provide the US with additional reliable generation capacity without requiring entirely new facilities to be built from scratch.

However, restarting older nuclear plants is not straightforward. Facilities that have been shut down for long periods may require extensive refurbishment, regulatory approvals and detailed safety reviews before returning to operation.
