Hyderabad: Tensions between the ruling Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) intensified in Telangana on Tuesday after Congress leaders staged a protest at Gandhi Bhavan over alleged derogatory remarks made by BRS MLC T. Madhusudan against Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.
Congress workers and leaders gathered at the party headquarters to condemn the alleged comments directed at the Speaker. The protest came amid a wider political confrontation between the two parties during the ongoing Assembly session.
AICC Secretary and Telangana Congress in-charge Sachin Sawant strongly criticised the BRS over the controversy. He alleged that the remarks reflected an ideology that was opposed to the principles associated with Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
Sawant also accused the BRS of sharing what he described as a “Manuvadi” outlook with the BJP and RSS. He questioned whether the Speaker’s Dalit identity had contributed to the alleged remarks and said the Congress would oppose such behaviour.
The controversy has drawn strong reactions from Congress leaders, who have demanded action against the BRS MLC. The issue has also added to tensions inside and outside the Telangana Legislature, with the ruling party portraying the incident as an attack on the dignity of the Speaker and the legislature.
The BRS, meanwhile, has been engaged in a broader confrontation with the Congress government over issues surrounding the ongoing Assembly proceedings.
The latest protest highlights the increasingly bitter political exchanges between the ruling Congress and the BRS, with both sides accusing the other of undermining democratic and legislative norms.
