Nepal has been devastated by unprecedented floods, with more than 600 people reportedly losing their lives. Amid the crisis, Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle has praised India for extending a helping hand to the flood-hit country.
Describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an “extremely generous person,” Wagle said New Delhi has indicated that India is ready to provide generous assistance for Nepal’s reconstruction.
Since Wednesday, India has sent 57.6 tonnes of relief material to flood-affected Nepal. At Kathmandu’s request, an 11-member Indian team, including medical personnel and experts in tunnel rescue operations, has also arrived in the country.
Wagle said Nepal would tackle the crisis in phases, with rescue operations being the immediate priority. So far, 1,930 people have been evacuated by air to safer locations.
The next phase will focus on temporary shelters and restoration efforts, followed by the challenging reconstruction process.
Recalling India’s support after the 2015 earthquake, Wagle said the Indian government had provided significant assistance at that time as well, and praised India for its generous response to the current disaster.
