Every year on September 5, India celebrates Teachers’ Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President, philosopher and educationist Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
After parents, teachers are among the most important people who guide us through life. Their knowledge, dedication, love and encouragement play a crucial role in shaping students into responsible and good human beings.
A teacher is not merely someone who teaches lessons in a classroom. A true teacher removes the darkness of ignorance, shows us the right path and helps us recognize the potential hidden within us.
That is why the Guru holds a special place in Indian spiritual tradition.
But who is a Guru? Why is the Guru considered so important? And can wisdom really be imparted without saying a single word?
There is an interesting spiritual story that beautifully explains the essence of the Guru and the true meaning of Guru Tattva. Let us explore that story.
Four Elderly Men.. Four Questions
Long ago, four elderly men were travelling in search of answers to questions that had troubled them throughout their lives.
The first man was going through severe difficulties. He wanted to know how he could overcome his problems and come out of his miserable situation.
The second man wanted greater progress and success in life. He was searching for the right path that would lead him towards prosperity and happiness.
The third man was searching for the answer to a much deeper question: What is the meaning of life?
The fourth man already possessed enormous knowledge. Yet, he constantly felt that something was missing within him. He could not even understand what exactly he was looking for.
As they continued their journey in search of answers, the four men eventually reached a place where a large banyan tree stood.
Under the tree, they saw a young man sitting peacefully with a gentle smile on his face.
The moment they saw him, all four felt that this young man could answer the questions they had been carrying for years.
They sat beside him.
But the young man did not utter a single word.
Surprisingly, after spending some time with him, the four realized that they had found the answers they were looking for.
No questions were asked. No answers were spoken. Yet, the seekers found what they had been searching for.
This story is traditionally regarded as a symbolic representation of the beginning of the Guru tradition. It is said that the four elderly seekers later became teachers themselves.
How Did Each Person Find the Answer?
According to the story, each seeker found a different kind of answer.
The first man found a way out of his difficulties.
The second man attained prosperity and happiness.
The third man found an answer to his search for the meaning of life.
The fourth man, despite already possessing great knowledge, needed a Guru to connect that knowledge with his inner self.
The deeper message of the story is simple yet profound:
A Guru does not always give us the answers. A Guru helps us discover the answers that already exist within us.
The Guru Who Taught Through Silence
One of the most fascinating aspects of this story is that the Guru did not speak at all.
In Indian spiritual tradition, Dakshinamurthy is regarded as the Adi Guru, or the primordial teacher. He is traditionally depicted imparting the highest spiritual wisdom through silence.
The famous verse attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, “Mauna-vyakhya-prakatita-para-brahma-tattvam”, is also associated with the idea that the highest truth can be revealed through silence.
Sometimes, silence can communicate what words cannot.
A Guru inspires us to think, question ourselves and ultimately discover the truth within.
Why Is the Banyan Tree Significant?
The banyan tree in this story is also considered a powerful symbol.
A banyan tree can grow and thrive even under challenging conditions. Once it grows, it provides shade and support to others without expecting anything in return.
This is similar to the nature of a Guru.
A Guru shares knowledge without expecting anything in return. Through wisdom and guidance, a Guru helps remove ignorance, fear, loneliness and helplessness from our lives and guides us towards confidence and inner freedom.
That is why the banyan tree is often seen as a symbol of Guru Tattva.
What Does the Word ‘Guru’ Mean?
The word Guru carries a deep spiritual meaning.
Traditionally, “Gu” is associated with darkness or ignorance, while “Ru” represents the force that removes it.
In this sense, a Guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance and leads us towards the light of knowledge.
When we do not know which direction to take in life, a Guru helps us find the right path.
A Guru, therefore, is not simply a person who teaches lessons.
A Guru is a guide who helps transform our lives.
Why Are the Disciples Old and the Guru Young?
Another interesting symbolism in the story is that the disciples are portrayed as elderly men while the Guru appears young.
This too carries a deeper meaning.
Constantly searching for something in the outside world can make the mind tired and burdened with doubts, desires and fears.
The elderly disciples represent the weariness of worldly seeking, while the young Guru represents the eternal freshness of wisdom and spiritual knowledge.
Knowledge has no age.
That is why the Guru is symbolically portrayed as young.
A Guru Reveals the Light Within Us
Throughout our lives, we encounter many Gurus.
It could be the teacher who taught us in school, a lecturer who guided us in college, a mentor who helped us grow professionally or simply someone who changed our perspective with a few meaningful words.
Their influence can remain with us for years.
A Guru may not walk with us throughout our entire journey, but a Guru gives us the courage to walk the journey on our own.
That is the true greatness of a Guru.
