Heavy Rain Disrupts Flight Operations

Heavy rainfall swept across Delhi-NCR on Monday, disrupting normal life as well as air travel.

Thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph were also expected in parts of the capital, according to weather officials. The adverse conditions affected arrivals and departures at Delhi airport.

15 Flights Diverted

At least 15 flights were diverted from Delhi airport because of the weather.

The diverted flights were sent to:

  • Chandigarh — 2

  • Lucknow — 1

More Than 280 Flights Delayed

The disruption extended beyond flight diversions.

Data from Flightradar24 showed that more than 280 flights were delayed, while over 20 services were cancelled. Delhi's IGIA handles more than 1,300 flight movements every day.

Three International Flights Diverted

Reports also indicated that three international flights were among the 15 diversions.

Flights bound for Delhi were redirected to alternative airports because of the deteriorating weather conditions.

Airlines Issue Advisories

Airlines issued travel advisories as the weather situation developed.

Air India warned that adverse weather could affect flights to and from Delhi.

IndiGo said bad weather had affected its schedules and that it was monitoring the situation.

SpiceJet warned that both arrivals and departures from Delhi, as well as consequential flights, could be affected.

IMD Weather Alerts

The India Meteorological Department issued red and yellow alerts for parts of Delhi amid the heavy rainfall.

Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds were also forecast in parts of the capital.

Passengers Advised to Check Flight Status

Airlines advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Heavy rain also caused waterlogging and traffic congestion across several parts of Delhi, meaning travellers were advised to allow additional time for their journey.
