The National Remote Sensing Centre, a key centre of ISRO, successfully conducted a four-day capacity-building programme on Forest Fire Detection and Burnt Area Mapping using satellite datasets for Bhutanese officials in Hyderabad from June 9 to June 12.

The programme, held under the India-Bhutan Space Cooperation Programme, trained 11 officials from Bhutan’s forest, land, education, and technology sectors. Experts from NRSC demonstrated satellite-based forest fire detection, burnt area mapping, fire severity assessment, and operational fire management systems.

Special lectures were delivered by experts from IIRS, SAC, and the Forest Survey of India on real-time fire monitoring, fire danger rating systems, and India’s fire management practices.

The participants also visited NRSC’s Shadnagar campus to learn about India’s satellite data reception and emergency management infrastructure. The programme aims to strengthen Bhutan’s forest fire monitoring capabilities and expand bilateral cooperation in space technology.
