Director Buchi Babu Sana has addressed the backlash surrounding the portrayal of Janhvi Kapoor’s character in Peddi, admitting that he was surprised by the negative response. He said he did not expect certain scenes to be viewed as problematic by audiences.

“I did not anticipate such a reaction”

Speaking to SCREEN, the filmmaker said he was taken aback by the criticism directed at the romantic track involving Janhvi Kapoor’s character, Achiyyamma.

“I had not anticipated that the scenes would be perceived so negatively by audiences,” he said.

He further explained that the intention was to present a light, playful romance between Ram Charan and Janhvi Kapoor. “However, we will be more careful and ensure better representation going forward,” he added.

Criticism Around Character Introduction and Romance Track

The backlash mainly focused on how Achiyyamma’s character was introduced and how her relationship with the protagonist unfolds in the film. Ram Charan plays the titular role of a cricketer-for-hire, with the story centered around his journey.

While audiences appreciated the film’s themes and second half, the romantic portions in the first half sparked debate online.

Concerns Raised by Viewers

Viewers pointed out that the character was introduced with visual focus on her body before her face, and certain romantic sequences were criticized for appearing to blur consent boundaries.

The discussion quickly spread beyond Telugu cinema circles, sparking wider conversations about the portrayal of women and relationships in mainstream films.

Peddi was released in theatres on June 4, 2026.
