The U.S. Supreme Court has delivered a landmark ruling on birthright citizenship. In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that former President Donald Trump's Executive Order, signed on January 20, 2025, is unconstitutional. The justices reaffirmed that the 14th Amendment guarantees U.S. citizenship to nearly everyone born on American soil.

Trump's order sought to deny automatic birthright citizenship to children born in the United States to parents who are temporary visa holders or living in the country without legal authorization. The Court held that this proposal conflicts with the Constitution.

Chief Justice John Roberts said the administration failed to provide sufficient justification for overturning a constitutional principle that has been settled for decades. He emphasized that the 14th Amendment was adopted after the Civil War to ensure equal rights and citizenship protections for all persons born in the United States.
