Shares of US retailer Target fell about 5% in early trading on Tuesday after the company faced widespread backlash over a controversial childrenโs Halloween costume.
The costume, marketed as the โKids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume,โ drew criticism on social media, with some consumers saying its design resembled racist caricatures associated with Blackface and minstrel shows.
Target Apologizes and Pulls Product
Target apologized on Monday and removed the costume from sale, acknowledging that the product was offensive and should not have been part of its merchandise lineup.
The company said it was particularly concerned about the impact on its Black customers, employees and business partners and said it would review how the product reached the market.
Backlash Weighs on Investor Sentiment
The controversy has added pressure on Target at a time when the retailer is working to rebuild consumer confidence and strengthen its financial performance.
Target shares had gained significantly earlier this year following efforts under new CEO Michael Fiddelke to improve the company's business performance. The latest controversy has raised concerns among investors about the potential impact of reputational issues on the retailer.
Stakeholders Remain Critical
Despite Target's apology, some community leaders and shareholders remain dissatisfied.
The SOC Investment Group, a Target shareholder that has previously criticized the company, said the incident reflects broader concerns about corporate decision-making and its potential impact on consumer trust.
Another Challenge for Target
The Halloween costume controversy comes after Target faced earlier disputes over its 2023 Pride merchandise and subsequent changes to its diversity, equity and inclusion policies.
The latest backlash could therefore add to the retailer's reputational challenges as it attempts to maintain customer loyalty and improve its financial performance.
