The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a 10-day Special Monsoon Drive to strengthen the city's preparedness for the rainy season. On the first day, extensive sanitation and infrastructure improvement works were carried out across 30 wards in Hyderabad.
During the drive, GHMC removed 36 metric tonnes of legacy municipal solid waste and 61.5 metric tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, taking the total waste cleared on Day 1 to over 97.5 metric tonnes.
To improve stormwater drainage and prevent waterlogging, civic teams filled 109 potholes, cleaned 105 catch pits, and removed silt from five culverts. In addition, 16.78 metric tonnes of floating waste and silt were cleared from drains and water channels.
As part of environmental initiatives, GHMC began work on 19 rainwater harvesting structures and surveyed 30 non-commercial buildings. Officials also inspected 22 public toilets and distributed 99 commercial dustbins to improve waste management practices.
Public health measures were also intensified during the drive. GHMC carried out anti-mosquito spraying, vaccinated and relocated stray dogs where necessary, and removed 34.9 metric tonnes of tree branches along with 9 metric tonnes of dry and green waste from 31 public parks.
GHMC officials said the special monsoon campaign aims to improve sanitation, reduce waterlogging, strengthen public health measures, and ensure the city is better prepared to handle heavy rainfall during the monsoon season.
